Speaking those ways now,
willing those things into being,
returning to where anything,
and thus nothing, is possible—
where I knew her dress’ color,
if it was geese or ducks we fed,
whether smoke or fog filled the air.
Once flanked by rotting bleachers,
the field is now a cobwebbed sprawl.
Its frosted tufts of grass are poked
by deer prints here and there.
A rhombus of ice escapes a pickup’s roof
where the ferris wheel flickered in the sun.
I almost see the splinter in her finger.
Were they candy or caramel apples?
And had the leaves fallen quite yet?
